Thesis (M.A.)--Webster University, 2017.
Has European Union governance been successful in handling Europe's recent influx of migrants? Current literature provides evidence of causes, consequences and solutions for migration into Europe. The importance of informed decision making, responsive strategies, and forward thinking leadership cannot be underestimated. Two case study countries, Italy and Greece, were chosen for this thesis because they are frontline external border Member States which experienced large numbers of Mediterranean Sea migrant arrivals as well as migration policy shortcomings. The aim of this research is to examine policies and consequences in light of the migrant influx. After the surge in illegal border crossings, the disapproval of the way the EU was dealing with the issue was greater in Greece than Italy, and the disapproval of both Italy and Greece was greater than seven other EU countries. Both Italy and Greece have political parties with anti-immigrant platforms, but in neither case is it predicted that these parties will take over their governments in the upcoming elections. In conclusion, the migrant crisis was actually a crisis in European governance. The EU has made strides toward managing the situation through policy reform and agreements with third countries. The most serious limitation of this study was that the economic crisis and its ramifications were ongoing at the time of the migrant influx and these factors could not be ruled out from providing alternative explanations.
