William Wordsworth lived and wrote in a period of intense religious debate, and yet his writings are often analyzed as if the only theological influence upon them is that of the orthodox Anglican Church. This dissertation attempts to reconstruct the diverse theological environment by focusing on one subject---poverty---and analyzing the religious attitudes regarding that subject during Wordsworth's youth. It examines contemporary sermons and religious writings from Anglican, Methodist, Evangelical, and Quaker sources to determine the theological perspective towards poverty each religious group held. It also presents relevant Anglican records from Cockermouth and Hawkshead, as well as Quaker records from Colthouse, so that the relationship between theological theory and practice can be seen. As the distinctions between the religious doctrines are established, Wordsworth's poetry is examined for evidence of these themes. Poems such as "A narrow girdle of stones," "Simon Lee," and "Goody Blake and Harry Gill" indicate that Wordsworth rejected orthodox Anglican views of the poor. A thorough exploration of "The Old Cumberland Beggar" indicates the positive presence of Methodist and evangelical attitudes, while "Last of the Flock," "The Brothers," "Michael," and "Repentance" all show marks of Quaker concern for the propertied poor. Finally, Rousseau's Emile, specifically the "Profession of Faith of the Vicar of Savoyard," becomes a model for religious inclusiveness within orthodoxy. As the final chapter demonstrates, that model becomes apparent in the structure of The Excursion and in its range of theological perspectives on poverty.
