Quality of care is a major concern for residents, families, organization and both state and federal regulators. Occupational stress associated with job performance can have a positive or negative relationship with quality care outcomes. This study was conducted to examine the link between occupational stress and job performance in a long-term care facility. This action research study explored factors that are associated with work-related stress and the affects it has on how certified nursing assistants (CNAs) provide care. The current study attempted to demonstrate the impact of stress in long-term care, by demonstrating the impact on job performance and care provided to residents in long-term care. This study also attempted to recommend coping strategies necessary to ameliorate identified factors associated with work-related stress within the focus facility. Case study interviews with participants provided the data used to examine the association between stress and quality of care. CNAs at the focus facility participated in interviews regarding work-related stress, quality of care, and ways in which to cope. This study utilized the cognitive transaction theory and job stress theory. The methodology used is a qualitative approach consisting of a non-randomized volunteer sampling of CNAs within the chosen skilled nursing facility. The results of this study indicated that nursing facilities (NF) staff should address concerns by CNAs that are affecting job performance. Based upon the findings of this study, the staff gained a better understanding of the contributing factors of stress associated with providing quality care. The findings may help to determine ways to improve the quality of life among older adults who live in NFs.
