Thesis (Psy.D.)--Michigan School of Professional Psychology, 2017.
This qualitative study explores the question, what is the military veterans' experience of communicating forward deployment. The heuristic research method was used to obtain a thorough understanding of the phenomenon and to incorporate the primary researcher's personal experience into the findings. The study includes a comprehensive review of relevant topics found within the current literature, including experiences unique to military veterans, veterans and mental health, therapeutic interventions used when working with military veterans, and veteran reintegration. The experiences of 12 participants, who served in wars ranging from Vietnam to the war in Afghanistan, were explored through in-depth interviews and extensive analysis of interview transcripts. The following themes found through data analysis are explicated: (a) the benefits of dialogue with other veterans regarding forward deployment, (b) barriers to communicating forward deployment experiences, (c) content communicated regarding forward deployment, and (d) changes in the communication of forward deployment experiences over time. Lastly, a chapter that compares findings to relevant literature outlines limitations of the study, suggests implications for therapists, and provides suggestions for future research. Also provided are reflections of the primary researcher's personal experience of conducting the study.
