Thesis (Ed.D.)--St. Thomas University, 2017.
This study examined how university students were motivated to participate in the arts. This focus was on the composition of arts audiences' motivation and the components that determined their participation. Eleven research questions were investigated based on four dimensions of arts audiences' leisure motivation (intellectual, social, competency, and stimulus avoidance) towards two categories of arts activities (arts exhibits and performing arts). In order to answer these research questions, the leisure motivation scale originally created by Beard and Regheb (1983) was applied in this study. Two independent variables, including gender and ethnicity, and 11 dependent variables (the total, the total arts exhibits, the total performing arts, the arts exhibit intellectual, the arts exhibit social, the arts exhibit competency, the arts exhibit stimulus-avoidance, the performing arts intellectual, the performing arts social, the performing arts competency, and the performing arts stimulus-avoidance motivation) were investigated on 186 university student subjects at St. Thomas University.

The results indicated two significant findings: (1) Asian students appeared to be more motivated in arts participation, and (2) except for Whites, female students were more motivated to attend performing arts by learning and experiencing new things. Other findings indicated that university students were motivated in arts mostly by escaping from their daily life.
