While previous researchers have studied the effects of parental deployment on children and adolescents, there is very limited literature on whether experiencing parental deployment during childhood and adolescence continues to impact adjustment into young adulthood. The current study investigated how parental deployment may affect two important areas of young adult adjustment: insecure attachments and risk-taking behavior in the form of alcohol use, illegal drug use, and risky sexual behavior.

Participants in the study were 34 young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who were recruited online. Seventeen participants experienced a parent deploy with the military during their childhood and/or adolescence and 17 participants did not have a parent in the military. Participants completed surveys assessing attachment style and high-risk behaviors. A subset of participants who experienced a parent deploy (n=6) elected to complete a more in-depth interview with this researcher regarding the aforementioned topics.

Results of the surveys showed no differences between the two groups in attachment style, alcohol use, or drug use. However, gender significantly predicted high-risk sexual behavior in the parental deployment group. Of the participants who completed interviews with this researcher, a subset reported attachment difficulties, alcohol and drug use concerns, and a history of mental heath symptoms.
