Thesis (D.B.A.)--Northcentral University, 2018.
High performing individuals are aware of how their emotions influence their actions, and the impact of negative feelings have on others. In a 2014 study conducted by the American Productivity and Quality Center (APQC), about 80% of the respondents stated that organizations face a deficit when it comes to leader effectiveness. Emotional intelligence emerged as an issue needing investigating. The research problem addressed in this study was that the quantitative contribution of emotional intelligence (EI) to leadership style and leader effectiveness is unknown and therefore emotional intelligence skills are not effectively targeted when attempts are made to improve leader effectiveness. A total of 225 participants from the information technology (IT) sector completed the Emotional Skills Assessment Process -- International (ESAP-I) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). A quantitative correlation multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine how much emotional intelligence adds to leadership style and leader effectiveness. The results revealed that emotional intelligence strongly predicts effective leadership and interpersonal skills (assertion) appears to drive this relationship. The practical application of the findings focused on using the results to develop leadership training programs that encourage and supports the influence of emotional intelligence on IT professionals' leadership style in the context of effectiveness and the value of these skills in managing change, reducing risks thus increasing organizational success through effective relationships and productive teams. Organizations who apply these findings with the intention to implement an assessment program that increases awareness of the connection between emotional intelligence, leadership style, and leader effectiveness for eventually introducing leadership training stand to positively impact long-lasting employee productivity thereby building a pipeline of effective leaders.
