The research was intended to answer the question: As compared with a comparable native group in Taiwan, in what way and to what extent has the parent-child relationship changed among three generations of Chinese in San Francisco. The instrument for the interview of eighth grade students was derived and developed by the researcher from Francis L. K. Hsu's study of American and Chinese cultural postulates. The findings included: (1) On the whole, Chinese in San Francisco, regardless of parental education level, have not been greatly assimilated in parent-child relationship, though the second and third generations (the American-born) clearly scored higher than the native group and the first generation in assimilation; (2) In terms of ethnic continuity, there was no significant difference between the native group and the first generation group, and between the second and the third generation groups; (3) In all groups, boys (sons) were found closer to their ethnic norms than girls (daughters).Subjects--Topical Terms:
