Thesis (M.A.)--Saint Mary's College of California, 2017.
Small Group Reading Strategies for Engagement in Informational Texts By Nadia Bellafronte Masters of Arts in Education Saint Mary's College of California, 2017 Tamara Spencer, Chair Small group work strategies are believed to be beneficial by many of today's educators. With the recent change in California's state standards, the Common Core State Standards have shifted towards a heavier focus on informational texts. Given that many teachers have noted waning student interest in informational texts, this thesis analyzes how pairing close reading strategies in a small group setting might influence engagement and reading comprehension of informational texts in a first grade classroom. Looking at a focus group of five students who were nearing reading proficiency, I collected data on those five students in whole group (entire class) and small group (consisting of the five focus students) sessions over a four-week period. My findings suggest that students' active engagement, such as raising hands, asking questions, and peer interaction, increased, and the level of thought and quality of work was higher in small group settings.
