This study explored the connection between scent, memory, and emotion, while also looking at scent and mate recognition. The study sought to answer five research questions: (1) Are individuals able to recognize their own scent when presented with other stimuli? (2) Are individuals able to recognize the scent of their partner when presented with other stimuli? (3) Do mates prefer the scents of each other over the scents of other individuals? (4) Are certain smells more likely than others to trigger memories of personal experiences? And (5) Are smells that trigger memories of personal experiences more likely to be pleasant or unpleasant?

Six couples (twelve participants) slept in plain, cotton t-shirts for two nights prior to participating. Participants smelled thirteen shirts (twelve from participants and one control) that had been slept in for two consecutive days. After smelling the shirts, participants noted their perception of each shirt while also attempting to identify the smell of their own shirt, as well as that of their partner. This research also attempted to explore the emotional response of memories triggered by six commonly encountered smells (lemon, garlic, lavender, vanilla, baby powder, and dirt) that were sealed within jars. Participants smelled the items in jars, then recalled any memories associated with the smell, ages at the time of the memory, and the emotional response of the memory, using a scale of pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral.

Participants were interviewed about the process, and interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded for themes. Four out of twelve individuals were able to correctly identify their partner's shirt, and one participant was able to correctly identify their own shirt. In jarred scents, results were significant for age at the time of recalled memories, with most memory recall being of childhood themes. Results were also significant for memory valence themes, with most recalled memories being positively associated.
