Objectives: To determine the effect of an abbreviated mindfulness intervention on burnout reported by hospice and palliative care staff. Design: Comparison of self reported burnout scores in a single sample, pre-test/post-test quantitative design after implementation of mindfulness intervention over period of 14 days. Setting: Non-profit healthcare organization specializing in hospice and palliative care, located in Napa, CA. Methods: Hospice and palliative care staff were recruited for participation. The 27 participants completed the pre-intervention Maslach Burnout Inventory-Health Services Survey (MBI-HSS) online and 16 of those participants completed the 14-day intervention and the post-intervention MBI-HSS. In this uncontrolled study, pre- and post-intervention scores were compared using a paired samples t-test with SPSS. Results: After a 14-day mindfulness intervention, paired t-test results for the 16 participants with post-test MBI scores revealed emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscales were significantly lower post-intervention. Personal accomplishment scores did not change post-intervention. Conclusion: In light of several limitations, this study suggests the potential impact of a brief mindfulness intervention to be used within an interdisciplinary team working in hospice and palliative care to manage stress-related symptoms of burnout.
