Thesis (M.S.)--Howard University, 2017.
The current study explored the relationship between sleep health and sexual risk taking; How do the affective, cognitive, and physiological consequences of poor sleep relate to sexual activity, sexual risk taking, and sexual desire, with respect to personality? It is hypothesized that poor sleep health will be associated with less sexual activity, less sexual desire, and greater sexual risk taking, and that relationships will be moderated by the personality traits of the Five Factor Model. The study consisted of 104 participants (41 males, 63 females) ages 18-35, who were not presently in a monogamous relationship. Participants completed a series of measures assessing sleep, sexuality, and personality. Participants were retroactively assigned to one of four sleep health groups according to their respective scores on the PSQI and ESS: Healthy Sleepers (PSQI < 5, ESS < 10), Unhealthy Sleepers (PSQI ≥ 5, ESS ≥ 10), Drowsy Sleepers (PSQI < 5, ESS ≥ 10), and Qualitatively Impaired Sleepers (PSQI ≥ 5, ESS < 10). Multivariate Analyses of Covariance revealed significantly higher levels of sexual risk taking in Unhealthy Sleepers for both males and females, despite reporting significantly less sexual activity. Implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.
