The purpose of this project was to provide a group psychotherapy intervention for children ages 6-9 diagnosed with cancer. The counseling group is grounded in psychosocial development humanistic theoretical framework, and grief work while using play therapy as the modality on which the sessions are based. The prevalence of cancer diagnoses in children and the psychological effects that occur as a result are examined. A review of the literature provides support for the effectiveness of play therapy, grief work, and humanistic theoretical framework with children. The 6-week group is designed to provide a space of understanding and support for children with cancer. The group is designed to improve the overall wellbeing of the group members while going through this difficult time in their lives.
