Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2017.
Anxiety is a common and pervasive condition for many individuals seeking therapy. Annihilation anxiety, a severe form of anxiety, whereby one perceives a threat of annihilation of the self or dissolution of the mind, is widely acknowledged in the psychoanalytic field as a source of suffering. In this thesis, Jungian and archetypal perspectives broaden the theoretical conceptualization of annihilation anxiety's etiology and phenomenology. Hermeneutic and alchemical hermeneutic methodologies guide exploration of universal mythopoetic themes and images from the unconscious relevant to annihilation anxiety in an effort to expand approaches for treatment. The research addresses populations that have experienced early infant trauma or abandonment. Archetypal motifs noted include the birth of ego consciousness, the disruption of the primary relationship with the Great Mother, images of the universe, and cosmic awareness. The findings point to the commonalities of these images with existential themes and the relevance of archetypal field theory for the research.
