Thesis (M.S.)--Illinois State University, 2017.
This study substantiates Hurston's notable contributions to, and position within, African-American literature of the first half of the twentieth century, specifically the migration narrative and the migrant stranger, by examining her works of fiction and nonfiction. Through analysis of her works, I answer the following questions: where does the migrant stranger originate from and what compels him/her to move from one place to another? I also investigate the internal conflicts, the mental and emotional makeup of these characters that sometimes demands they move not just once, but multiple times within the narrative of a migration novel. Finally, I propose Hurston herself serves as the inspiration for the migrant stranger character she so accurately depicts in her literary fiction, nonfiction, and folklore.
