Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Northern Colorado, 1998.
This study examined the effects of two models of school-based consultation on student client behavior and the classroom environment. Specifically, comparisons were made between Kratochwill and Bergan's (1993) model of behavioral consultation and a recently developed model of consultation, solution focused consultation (Copeland & Geil, 1996). A curriculum based assessment consultation control (i.e., no "outsider" consultation training was provided) was used as a comparison group. Ongoing observations of student behavior and responding were conducted using an adapted version of the Code for Instructional Structure and Student Academic Response (CISSAR). The classroom environment was evaluated pre- and post-consultation with The Instructional Environment System-II.

Eight student client, consultee and consultant triads participated in the study. Students had all been identified as exhibiting externalizing behaviors in their respective classrooms. Teachers agreed to participate in consultation with a school psychology consultant to prevent potential referrals for special education evaluation. A single subject research design was employed to measure student client outcomes associated with consultation interventions. Visual analysis of graphic data was used to assess student outcomes, and descriptive data were provided to evaluate changes in the classroom environment that may have been related to consultation interventions.

Results suggested that consultation can produce change in student client behavior and may have an effect on the classroom environment. However, findings were not consistent within conditions. Consequently, it was difficult to develop firm conclusions about the efficacy of consultation interventions. Students in the curriculum based assessment consultation control condition did not exhibit changes in behavior nor were changes observed in the classroom environment. One student in the behavioral condition demonstrated significant change in behavior and small changes were observed in the classroom environment. Because behavioral consultation has vast support in the literature, researchers were primarily concerned with evaluating the efficacy of solution focused consultation. It was promising that one student in the solution focused condition demonstrated significant behavior change after solution focused interventions were introduced. In addition, changes in the classroom environment of this particular student were observed. It was determined that solution focused consultation does hold promise as a model of school-based consultation, but more research is needed before definite conclusions can be generated about this model of consultation.
