Thesis (Ed.D.)--Northern Arizona University, 2017.
The indigenous Kwatsaan are one of fifty California Native American language groups who are no longer transmitting the mother tongue as the primary language to their children (Hinton & Hale, 2001). This lack of intergenerational transfer places all of these languages in an endangered or moribund status (Grenoble & Whaley, 2006). This lack of intergenerational transfer among the Kwatsaan has now resulted in 54, or less than 5%, of fluent Kwatsaan language speakers in its population; all except two who are over the age of seventy-four and most of whom are in poor health (Ila Dunzweiler, Personal Communication, 2015). Cultural identity is dependent upon the knowledge of the language. Therefore, it is critical that the language is preserved for future understanding of the culture. This ethnographical study will illuminate the unique, non-obvious factors and dimensions of Kwatsaan language acquisition. This study will also assist the Kwatsaan Tribe in identifying contextual influences, resources and considerations in language program planning. In this way, the Quechan may uniquely tailor their program for the contextual variables (including Spiritual) within and outside the Tribe. This study would aid in the future strategic planning and organization for the revitalization of the Kwatsaan language. A broader purpose is to contribute to the understanding of indigenous language acquisition and revitalization and provide a direction for future research in this area.
