Thesis (M.S.)--Villanova University, 2017.
A controversial issue in psycholinguistics concerns the extent to which different sources of information (e.g., lexical, semantic, and syntactic) are encapsulated from each other during language processing. That is, do listeners finish processing lower-level information (e.g., encoding differences in speech sounds) before moving on to higher-level information (e.g., determining part of speech)? Work has thus far focused on understanding the nature of processing within each domain, and although recent work has supported a parallel framework within each level, the evidence has been largely inconclusive. Moreover, less work has been directed at answering the larger question of whether the language processing system is fundamentally parallel across different levels of processing. This project investigated the time-course of different levels of processing using a novel experimental paradigm, the results of which indicated that multiple types of linguistic representations are active simultaneously during spoken word recognition, consistent with parallel processing models.
