The focus of this study is to compare the construction of negatives from 3-6 year-old children in relation to the three stages of negation development: (a) Negative-agent-verb sequences, (b) Do inclusion and (c) subject omission. The L1=L2 theory predicts the following: the use of do in negatives and the subject inclusion in sentences will increase while the negative-agent verb sequences should follow normal development as stated by Klima and Bellugi (1966).

The transfer theory predicts that the negative agent verb sequence will follow the Spanish based constructions, do forms will be infrequent since they do not exist in Spanish and subjects will be omitted in sentences since it is a permissible modality in Spanish. Lastly, it is predicted that the Spanish production of negatives will reflect the English constructions since language interaction is reciprocal.
