Comparing Bernie Sanders' 2016 Primary Campaign Agenda to the Media Agenda.
- Ann Arbor : ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, 2017 - 49 p.
Source: Masters Abstracts International, Volume: 56-03.
Thesis (M.P.R.)--Quinnipiac University, 2017.
This study content analyzes news releases from Bernie Sanders' 2016 Democratic primary campaign using the agenda building theory as a framework. It then assesses the media's agenda during the same four-month period of Sanders' campaign so it can be compared to Sanders' agenda. Sanders' agenda is issues-focused and he concentrates on stereotypical Democratic Party issues such as the economy, income disparity, and healthcare. His news releases portray him as a person of integrity who is an idealistic yet serious politician. Analysis of the news articles corroborates past research regarding the media's propensity to pay particular attention to the "horserace" of politics. The media's agenda also favors conflict as a news frame and features discussion of candidates' character traits more prominently than discussion of candidates' issues positions.
