This dissertation is a qualitative study that assesses the impact of college Residence Halls on the student learning experiences of international undergraduate students from India, during their first year. The Student Personnel Point of View (1949) stated that the purpose of higher education is to educate the "whole student" by combining intensive academic learning with learning outside the classroom. Residence Halls are an active and purposeful environment for academic, social, and co-curricular engagement, beyond the classroom. Living in college Residence Halls promotes persistence and all-round student development.

This study examines the ways international undergraduate students from India made sense of student learning experiences in Residence Halls, their understanding of the educational potential of Residence Halls, and the process of integrating academic and co-curricular experiences. This study was conducted at a large, private, research university in the northeast US that hosts a large number of international students. Through individual interviews with ten international undergraduate students from India, this study analyzed important factors, such as Residence Hall environment and staff, academic and Residence Hall programs, interactions with peers, and various constraints that influenced students.

Data analysis concluded that the first semester is a difficult period of adjustment for international undergraduate students from India. However, living in college Residence Halls offers many benefits, like basic amenities, convenience, varied community-building opportunities, interactions with a wide group of peers and staff, and fosters a strong sense of belonging. It was also noted that structured academic and Residence Hall programs helped students adjust academically, promoted student involvement, and encouraged participation in leadership opportunities.

College Residence Halls are a great setting for meeting people, developing close relationships with room-mates, and experiencing diversity, resulting in all-round student development. Despite the numerous benefits of living in college Residence Halls, some participants reported an initial lack of interest in student involvement opportunities, needing time to adapt to life on campus, and the regret of not maximizing their student learning experiences, during their first year. This study highlighted the educational potential of Residence Halls, an aspect of the US college experience that is often undervalued by international undergraduate students from India.
