Thesis (Psy.D.)--Azusa Pacific University, 2016.
This critical literature review documents and critiques the peer-reviewed research surrounding the relationship between marriage, religion/spirituality, and culture. This exploration of the literature has yielded unique insights in the interrelationship between religion and culture and how the interplay between these two variables influences marital quality. Due to the complexity of these interconnections, the three primary variables of this study were organized into a Venn diagram, creating four major categories. Theoretical and clinical implications are also discussed. In general, research has shown religion and spirituality to be a helpful source of strength for marital quality, as they provide opportunities for shared core beliefs, connecting practices that bond couples together, and an intentional valuing of the marital relationship. The only potentially harmful effects of religion and spirituality on marital quality noted were when spouses identified as having different faiths.
