This study aimed to examine the instructional practices of technology education teachers to identify those characteristics that, according to the literature, indicate a paradigm shift or transition from Industrial Arts teaching to Technology literacy teaching. The study sample consisted of 142 Principles of Education Technologies teachers, from a total population of 223 of Technology Education Program active teachers. 82% of teachers participating in the study had permanent status on the job and 83% over ten (10) years of experience as a teacher of technology education.

For this research a quantitative method with descriptive approach was selected; the design was to survey. As an instrument for data collection was used Questionnaire Survey Technology Education Programs, developed and used by Mark Sanders in 1999 in a national study to examine trends in technology education from 1960 to the end of the 20th century. For the present investigation permission was requested from Mark Sanders, to use, translate, and adjust the questionnaire, to the context of technological education in Puerto Rico. After collecting the information, the analysis, interpretation and description of the findings was conducted.

42% of teachers understands that the title of technological education is the most appropriate to describe what is currently taught, while 41% of teachers valued more educational purposes related to the paradigm of teaching Industrial Arts. 78% showed a preference in using the method of instruction for construction projects by task sheet over the method of instruction by Problem Solving for Engineering Design. Not any correlation found between academic preparation (rho = .224) or years of experience of teachers (rho = .113) and using the method of instruction used was established. In Chapter V the discussion of findings, conclusions and recommendations that emerged after conducted this study are presented.
