Total energy expenditure (TEE) can be divided into three main components: basal metabolic rate, thermic effect of food, and physical activity energy expenditure. TEE has been described as the sum of these components using an "additive model". More recently, a "constrained model" of energy expenditure has been proposed for TEE regulation. The constrained model of TEE states that non-exercise physical activity energy expenditure (i.e. NEAT) and energy spent on basic metabolic processes may adapt to a variation in physical activity to maintain TEE within a narrow range. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine if short-term endurance exercise training influenced components of TEE consistent with the constrained model. The principle findings showed no significant interaction between group and time for REE, REE relative to lean mass, resting RER, and total steps (all P > 0.05) suggesting exercise neither increases nor decreases REE or NEAT. On the surface, these findings are not consistent with the constrained model of TEE; however, secondary analyses of individual responses for REE data suggests endurance exercise training may have varying influences on REE that may differ based on the individual, potentially due to a genetic basis.
