Thesis (M.S.)--Utica College, 2017.
The focus of this capstone was to explore quality of life for patients with Alzheimer dementia that reside in a long-term care facility. Twenty percent of the population is expected to be 65 or older by 2050, and the chances of developing Alzheimer disease doubles every 5 years beyond age 65 (Alzheimer's Foundation of America, January 28, 2016). Training and education of medical staff is a critical component to the quality of life for the Alzheimer patient. Through research and analysis current practices were compared to determine quality of life for patients with Alzheimer disease. This capstone researched how early diagnosis is necessary to slow the progression of cognitive decline and addressed the role physical activity and cognitive engagement plays throughout the disease process. Also investigated were ways to reduce behaviors such as aggression and resistance to care by altering the physical environment, providing training and education, and focused activities to improve the quality of life for the Alzheimer patient residing in a long-term care facility.
