The purpose of this study was to describe what the direct-care staff members of the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan experienced in applying the Crisis Prevention Institute's Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training (CPI) techniques to manage violence in the real-life circumstances. The direct-care staff member's experiences were explored using a single case study with embedded units of analysis. The units of analysis were three nurses and four mental health clinicians selected from the direct-care staff at CMHI-FL with experience intervening in violent situations. Multiple sources of data were used, including interviews conducted with the seven direct-care staff, and the results of a 2013 survey of multidisciplinary staff members' attitudes regarding the CPI program. The analysis of the interviews revealed that the participants found CPI training to be useful, though not comprehensive. In addition, they shared both the positive and negative aspects of applying the techniques in real-life circumstances in the treatment unit settings. Most importantly, staff members' attitudes were seen as the principal factors affecting the utilization of CPI techniques. The findings and conclusions of this study are significant in that they provide new data concerning specific components of crisis intervention training. In addition, the need for further research was identified pertaining to experiential training, and what staff members want and need from a crisis intervention program.
