Many Internet users are very unaware of the all cyber threats that lurk around the cyber realm. Most of these Internet users often think that they will not become victims and take security measures for granted. This research proposed security measures Internet users can employ to avoid becoming victims of identity theft. Consideration for what goes on inside a cybercriminal's mind gives perspective on how the criminal commits the crime and his or her motives. The three major aspects covered included motivating factors contribute to cybercriminals choosing victims of identity theft, inherent difficulties in prosecuting cases of identity theft, and best practices to avoid becoming victims of identity theft. The exploration of each topic ranging from motivating factors that drive cybercriminals into committing cybercrimes and also choosing which victims they will target to learning about the different obstacles law enforcement and prosecutors undergo when dealing with identity theft situations. Proper usage of techniques and safe practices regarding identity theft are also explained during the research. The discussion of findings makes a deeper exploration on all the different topics found in the literature review. Some of these findings include actual techniques that are employed in order to commit these crimes as well as the motives that drive cyber thieves into perpetrating these activities. Different anti identity theft safe practices will give the reader a better idea as to what needs to take place in order to avoid becoming victims of this crime. The recommendations for future research include what to do if important database systems are hacked such as the vital records, also how to prevent the theft of personal information on fitness bands and preventing data breaches in cloud services.
