This dissertation focuses on Ji Yun's (1724-1805) collection of tales, the Yuewei caotang biji (Random Jottings at the Cottage of Close Scrutiny), as representative of a didactic type of zhiguai (records of the strange) in eighteenth century China. In it didacticism can be seen to replace aesthetics as a formal principle of literary expression, permitting the author to address "illegitimate" materials--supernatural phenomena and occurrences--in a literary endeavor.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a In Chapter 1, the prefaces to six different zhiguai collections of the period are analyzed for what they reveal of the authors' intentions. The compilers were almost unanimous in claiming that they aimed at the edification of the masses. Nevertheless, as is shown in Chapter 2, didacticism was not itself the main motive for compiling the zhiguai. The informal social conversations on the supernatural, which provided the materials for the Yuewei caotang biji, reveal a deep-seated fascination with the supernatural among elite members which, in fact, gave rise to the compilation. Chapter 3 focuses on Ji Yun's understanding of didacticism as a literary mode, seen in the context of his rejection of Pu Songling's (1644-1715) aesthetic model in the Liaozhai zhiyi (Tales of Anomalies from the Studio of Leisure). Detailed analysis of selected tales from Ji Yun's collection, undertaken with the aim of showing zhiguai didactics at work, form the core of Chapter 4. The concluding chapter discusses the way Ji Yun established supporting frameworks for the dominant didactic structure by casting his stories in the prevalent modes of intellectual discourse at the time. It was by such means that his compilation effort was further justified.
