This study profiles the past, present, and future perspectives of the U.S.-China Education Exchange Program. The aim of this study is to provide an overall evaluation of the U.S.-China Education Exchange Program based on the analysis of data obtained from published materials, questionnaires and interviews. It also attempts to provide possible solutions to the difficulties and problems presently existing in the bilateral education exchange relations.

The study examines the following aspects of U.S.-China education exchanges: (1) Historical background of U.S.-China education exchange relations. (2) Present situation of the bilateral exchange programs. (3) The variety of exchange programs and institutions involved in exchanges. (4) American and Chinese educators' and administrators' attitudes towards the exchange programs in terms of political, economic, academic, technological, cost effective, and diplomatic impacts. (5) Comments and opinions of policy makers in both countries. (6) Problems and difficulties presently existing in U.S.-China education exchange programs and the possible solutions. (7) Recommendations for future education exchanges.

The findings of the study are encouraging. Data show that there are several areas of common interest in which China and the United States have benefited. These areas are diplomacy, technology, economy and politics. There are indications that despite problems and difficulties existing in the U.S.-China education exchange relations, the U.S.-China Education Exchange Program has been deemed positive and beneficial by most educators and administrators in the research population.
