The subject of the study is an investigation of the effects of different rhetorical structures of English expository prose on the comprehension of Chinese EFL readers and the reading strategies they employed.

Twelve graduate students from China were selected to participate in the study. They were asked to read and recall four English expository texts of four different types of rhetorical patterns: collection of descriptions, comparison, causation and problem/solution. They were also observed during the reading process and interviewed after the reading tasks about their concepts about the reading process and reading strategies they used in reading in English and in Chinese as well.

Results showed that differences did exist to the extent that the 12 subjects comprehended the English expository prose with different rhetorical structures. The more tightly organized texts (comparison, causation and problem/solution) appeared to be more conductive to comprehension than the less tightly organized text (collection of descriptions). Results also indicated that Chinese EFL readers employed an interactive approach to reading, that is, they used both top-down and bottom-up processing strategies at the same time. More interestingly, however, they showed a bottom-up bias in reading English but a top-down bias in reading Chinese.

The cause for this biased strategy use may be twofold: the ceiling effect of their language proficiency and cultural interference. Specific results are presented and discussed, as are limitations of the study and implications for teaching EFL reading in China.
