Thesis (Ph.D.)--State University of New York at Albany, 1989.
This dissertation studies the quality of life in urban China, through empirical information collected in the City of Tianjin, during the month of November, 1985. There are two major goals in the current study: (1) to investigate empirically how best to conceptualize the nature of quality of life (QOL); (2) to find out what are the major factors that account for the quality of life of the individual citizens in urban China (especially the city of Tianjin). The study employed an integrated model of three major theoretical approaches in the field.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This dissertation studies the quality of life in urban China, through empirical information collected in the City of Tianjin, during the month of November, 1985. There are two major goals in the current study: (1) to investigate empirically how best to conceptualize the nature of quality of life (QOL); (2) to find out what are the major factors that account for the quality of life of the individual citizens in urban China (especially the city of Tianjin). The study employed an integrated model of three major theoretical approaches in the field.

Agreeing with the mainstream argument in the literature, this study employs a subjective approach in the development of QOL measures. Specifically, this study uses "satisfactory feelings toward life" as indicators of one's QOL. Twenty-two items are selected and used to reflect various significant aspects of urban life in China.

In an effort to construct a single measure of global QOL, three popular methods were identified through a literature review: the single-question approach, the multiple-scale approach, and the indirect approach. Using the concept of quality of work (QOW) and its indicators, the various methods were tested and compared. The study concludes that the most appropriate approach in building a global QOL is the multiple-scale approach, and the simple-summation method is most effective in operation.

The research findings in this study are consistent with the literature in that QOL is found to be primarily a function of one's psychological environment. However, the unique finding in this study calls attention to the indirect effects of both the social and economic environments on QOL. Taking into consideration the indirect effects, the social environment works as well as the psychological environment in predicting QOL. Moreover, the effect of the economic environment on QOL, contrary to most of the findings in the literature, becomes significant and substantial, when the indirect effects are considered.
