Du Fu (712-770) was a genius at composing what one early Tang source aptly describes as "great poems" (dashi)--long poems of one hundred lines or more. But Du Fu's contributions have never been studied in detail, nor have developments in extended lyrics ever been treated in conventional histories of Tang poetry. In this study, his three most important works are presented in well-annotated translations. The history of developments in extended lyrics from the 6th century to the end of the Tang is reconstructed to provide a context for understanding Du Fu's originality and influence. Traditionally, Du Fu's extended lyrics have been read as "history in verse" (shishi); aspects of this concept are analyzed in detail. Since Du Fu cannot be translated from any single edition, and since Du Fu bibliography is complex, the methodology for selecting textual and interpretative sources is explained in detail. William Hung's choices, which have had a formative influence on the past generation of western sinological translations, are placed in perspective and updated. Other useful sources which have become available up to 1987 are also introduced in the introductory bibliographic essay.Subjects--Topical Terms:
