Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 1989.
This thesis is an intellectual sketch of Agnes Smedley, an American woman radical who devoted herself to the 1927-49 Chinese Revolution. Like John Reed who was known for his report on the Russian Revolution, Smedley played a major role in adjusting the American vision toward great historic changes in Asia. Unlike Reed the typical middle-class rebel, however, Smedley has been viewed less congenial with main-stream American radicalism, and her image one of a social misfit or a stray from the intellectual highways at home.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Descriptive as well as analytical, this thesis endeavors to re-examine Smedley's intellectual vagabondage from a bilateral point of view that may cut across cultural and ideological limits between the two nations. Tracing her growth from a poor American farmer's daughter to a staunch radical-feminist-internationalist, this thesis offers a new interpretation of her pilgrimage in China as tied down to the agrarian roots of Jeffersonian democracy, and her espousal of the rural-based Chinese Revolution an expressive betrayal of the much suppressed American vein of "primitive rebels", who, because of America's rapid shift into an industrialized state, failed to vent their grief and anger in the form of a powerful agrarian revolution.

Smedley, as seen from this offshooting angle, turns out a representative Daughter of Earth uprooted from her own land yet unable to break into an urbanized, corporated world of Capitalism. Her American Dream lost at home, she went abroad hunting for the type of Revolution that would live up to her ideals. She found her dream in China, died for it, and left room for students of American history to ponder why so little heed has been paid to social protest falling outside the dominant pattern of liberalism, and does Smedley's story merely chart the byways of history?
