The major purpose in this study was to determine if factors existed that were related to the level of job performance of Fisheries Extension agents in Taiwan. The study included 33 of the 35 agents employed in January 1988.

The level of job performance of the agents was ranked by the Director of the Extension Division of the Taiwan Provincial Fishermen's Association by using the paired comparison technique. Based on the rankings, the agents were divided into equal sized high, medium, and low job performance groups.

Data on factors related to the level of job performance were obtained from the agents by using a questionnaire. The questionnaire included three major sections: (a) Personal Characteristics (gender, marital status, age, tenure in Extension, educational attainment, subject matter of academic degree, prior work experience, and membership in organizations), (b) Job Satisfaction, and (c) Self-Directed Learning.

The statistical analysis of the data was accomplished by testing the significance of the difference among job performance groups in regard to each selected factor. Chi-square, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Student-Newman-Keuls (SNK) tests were employed to analyze the data. The.05 level of significance was selected.

Nine of those ten factors (all of the eight personal characteristics and self-directed learning) examined were not related significantly (.05 level) to the level of job performance. However, a relationship approaching significance existed for agents' age, tenure, subject matter of academic degree, and membership in organizations. Nevertheless, it was concluded that personal characteristics as included in this study and self-directed learning can probably be disregarded in making decisions concerning evaluation of job performance of the agents.

A significant relationship was found to exist only between the job satisfaction and job performance of the agents. It was also found that the most significant relationship between job satisfaction and job performance existed among high performing agents. It was further concluded that a knowledge of the degree of job satisfaction would provide a basis for reassurance about the level of job performance of the agents.
