This dissertation deals with the educational philosophy of Ts'ai Yuan-p'ei (1863-1940), former Chancellor of Peking University. Three main perspectives of Ts'ai's educational philosophy are examined: (1) political education, including military education, utilitarian education, and ethical education; (2) education beyond politics, including world-view education and aesthetic education; and (3) Ts'ai's views on university education, the education of women, and social education. In addition, Ts'ai's life and writings, and philosophy in general are briefly dealt with in Chapter II and III respectively.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The historical approach is employed in this study. First, an exhaustive effort is made in collecting the materials related to the writings by Ts'ai and writings about Ts'ai. Next, based on both writings, this study explores the three main perspectives, mentioned above, of Ts'ai's educational philosophy. Finally, an appraisal of Ts'ai's educational philosophy is made under the "Summary" section at the end of the discussion of each issue of the three main perspectives.
520 $a This study finds that the most outstanding contribution that Ts'ai has made to the history of modern Chinese education lies in his capacity of synthesizing both Chinese and Western schools of thought into the formulation of his educational philosophy most suitable for the 20th-century China. It is precisely such a synthesizing effort that wins Ts'ai the title of "a modern Confucius," or the greatest educator in modern China.
