Subei Village underwent a dramatic change in social structure during the nationwide economic reform of the early 1980s in China. 520 $a Our data suggest that the structural change in question was a product of collective adaptation to an emerged crisis, or a "critical tension complex." Two basic sources of the tension complex--environmental and psychological--are analysed. On the environmental side, the paper primarily examines the role of political and symbolic inconsistencies, especially their dominant aspects. On the psychological side, analysis is focused on the significance of three kinds of dispositions, i.e., bounded rationality, contextual justice of distribution, and differential commitment. It was found that interaction between the two sources constituted a critical tension complex which probablistically defined the general orientations of the peasants' situational conception, whereas cognitive organization, in turn, provided a line of action in each case of their conscious adaptive behavior. This dynamic process eventually operated to the effect of dissolving the tension complex.
520 $a These observations testify to the relevance of several influential theories such as structuralism, historical materialism, cultural determinism, theory of political economy, symbolic interactionism, etc., which often appear contradictory to one another. The tension reduction model is proposed to integrate their relevant components to account for socio-structural change in general.
