Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Miami, 1987.
The status of a nation's scientific and technological development is of vital importance in determining that country's position in today's highly competitive international scene. That is why this author decided to examine and attempt to analyze the past, present, and possible future role of science and technology in China's economic and political development. Chapter One gives a brief overview of past and present difficulties affecting the growth of science in modern China. Chapter Two endeavors to give an in-depth analysis of the development of science and technology in both Imperial and Republican China. Chapter Three examines the impact of Maoist ideology on scientific progress in China during the period from 1949 to 1976. Chapter Four describes some of the successes the Chinese have had in various fields of high technology such as space, nuclear energy and electronics. Chapter Five examines and analyzes the reforms that have been introduced since 1976 to improve the performance of Communist China's scientific community. Chapter Six deals with the problems and prospects of technology transfer with the People's Republic of China. Chapter Seven is the conclusion.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Upon completion of his dissertation, the author concluded that the only way the Communist China can fully realize its scientific and technological potential is to transform itself into a largely pluralist society. However, since this would involve a major reduction in the authority of the Chinese Community Party, the author believes that the prospects for such a development are doubtful, at best.
