Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University, 1987.
This study examines the change in class structure and in the distribution of material rewards in postwar Taiwan, a rapidly developing capitalist society. First, this study clarifies the theoretical meaning of social class in developing capitalist societies. The relationships between class structure and three types of organization (family businesses, multinational corporations, and capitalist state) have been specified.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study examines the change in class structure and in the distribution of material rewards in postwar Taiwan, a rapidly developing capitalist society. First, this study clarifies the theoretical meaning of social class in developing capitalist societies. The relationships between class structure and three types of organization (family businesses, multinational corporations, and capitalist state) have been specified.

In Taiwan, domestic capitalists only constituted about 5 percent of the labor force. Petty bourgeoisie had decreased dramatically, but they still constituted about 20 percent of the labor force in 1983. Managerial workers are still small in proportion (less than 5 percent of the labor force). Workers have become the major component of the labor force (more than 60 percent of the labor force). Unpaid family workers have decreased dramatically. In addition, Taiwan has become more equal in terms of income distribution, wage differentials, and capital-labor income ratio. The combination of equal reward distribution and unequal class structure is found to be due to the fact that the increase in income for workers is larger than that for capitalists and petty bourgeoisie.

Then this study examines the factors affecting the change in class structure and reward distribution. Using Taiwan's data, the results show that changes in class structure and reward distribution are taking place increasingly at the international level. Neither internal factors (i.e., internal economic contradictions, state mechanism, labor power) nor external forces (i.e., foreign aid, foreign investment, international trade) are capable of explaining class inequality and equal income distribution in Taiwan. The explanation must be sought from a combination of economic structuralism, state capitalism and world system theory.
