This research reconstitutes and analyzes demographic data for some 10,000 Chinese families resident in the county of Tongcheng in central China's Anhui Province for the period 1520-1661. Data have been drawn from a large number of lineage genealogies in order to reconstruct aspects of the demographic history of one small, rural area of China.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In general, the research confirms and documents a number of characteristics of traditional China's demographic regime previously assumed to have been the case, but without empirical evidence. First, for the lineage populations under study, marriage for women was early (from age 17 to 18) and apparently universal throughout the time period of study. Marriage for men was also early (from age 21 to 22), but apparently less than universal as more than 20% of all male children surviving infancy never married. Age at first marriage for males also varied significantly by social status, with high status males marrying at considerably younger ages than lower status males.

Marriage factors also appear to account for a good proportion of the difference in net growth rates among social status groups, which is one of the major findings of this research.
