The purpose of this study was to investigate vocational-industrial teachers' perceptions of both importance of and their own preparation levels in professional competencies and to determine the relationship between these two criterion variables. The sample used in this study was composed of 375 industrial education teachers who were teaching in four public vocational-industrial high schools in Taipei, Taiwan during the school year of 1983-1984. The data were collected through questionnaires. The questionnaire consisted of two parts. Part I was a background information form designed to collect demographic data from teachers. Part II was a 66-item attitude questionnaire. Each item in the questionnaire was related to a specific professional competency and was referenced to two Likert scales: importance and preparation. Percentage, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient, Analysis of Variance, and Multiple Regression Analysis were employed to analyze the data.

Major findings of the study were: (1) All 66 professional competencies were perceived as being important for successful teaching by vocational-industrial teachers in Taipei City. (2) There still remains a need for professional competency development for Taipei's vocational-industrial teachers. (3) Vocational-industrial teachers' importance ratings of professional competencies were significantly correlated with teaching subject. The teachers' preparation levels in professional competencies were significantly correlated with school, position, length of teaching, teaching certification, pre-service training, in-service training, and academic degree. (4) Vocational-industrial teachers' importance ratings of professional competencies differed by their teaching subject and age. The teachers' preparation levels in professional competencies differed by their school, position, teaching certification, pre-service training, in-service training, academic degree, and age. (5) Vocational-industrial teachers' professional preparation can be predicted by five teachers' characteristics: school, position, teaching certification, pre-service training, and in-service training.
