Thesis (M.S.)--University of California, Davis, 2017.
The purpose of this project was to create a best-practice, research informed course for students of the health professions with the goal of enhancing students' knowledge, confidence, and likelihood of engaging political entities and stakeholders. Education increases understanding about the complexities of health policy. Healthcare professionals have a personal and professional stake in policies that support and promote the health of their patients. Trends were noted among the educational strategies found in both research and classroom settings and were used to develop a course for graduate-level health professions students. Materials were created to meet the purpose of developing a health policy course for health professions. Health care professionals who have been educated about health policy are more likely to engage politically, and in turn advocate for policies that promote patient and community health.
