Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2015.
The purpose of this study was to explore and discover the motivation and methods skilled teachers (i.e., based on the percentage of students who meet or exceed the states' standards for grade level on the Criterion Referenced Competency Test or the Student Learning Objectives) used to group students for instruction. The central research question used to guide the development of this qualitative research study was: What are the strategies, techniques, and practices for instruction used by teachers who are highly skilled at ability grouping? In addition, there were four sub-questions: (a) What is a motivating factor that enables teachers to use grouping as a teaching method? (b) What methods are utilized to group students for daily instruction? (c) What variations in the curriculum are made to accommodate the various instructional groups? And, (d) What type of training do teachers need for grouping practices? The study was conducted in a suburban elementary school setting in the Southeastern United States with teachers as the participants. Teachers who met the selection criteria were given an opportunity to participate in one-on-one interviews with the researcher. Results showed that ability grouping shaped the instructional delivery of each participant's teaching approach, and being able to meet the needs of diverse students within classrooms continues to be a motivating factor for their use of ability grouping. Emphasis on the benefits of grouping students was a resounding viewpoint shared between all the respondents as well as the ability to see potential among the student population. Furthermore, participations reported that they use: (a) a variety of testing and performance measures to place students in ability groups and (b) many diverse strategies, techniques and to meet the needs of their students. In addition, implications, recommendations, and conclusions are also discussed.
