This dissertation investigated the relationship and connectedness between undergraduate music education programs, state certification for music educators, and the real world expectations and job requirements for music teachers at the K-12 level. This dissertation looked at literature dealing with undergraduate music education curricula. The paper examined reflections of both undergraduate pre-service teachers as well as current educators. It also studied the requirements of undergraduate and graduate music education programs from various universities as well as probed the certification expectations of states. Designers and decision makers of undergraduate music education programs could use this information to reflect upon and possibly make appropriate curricular adjustments to their program as it pertains to the association between undergraduate music education programs, state certification, and the professional expectations for K-12 music educators.
