Nonprofit arts organizations in the United States are experiencing declining attendance, donations, and arts education, much as health care and other nonprofits declined two decades ago. For health care and other nonprofit organizations, application of effective authentic leadership traits in strategic planning to address conditions effecting those organizations helped reverse declines. How authentic leadership traits effect strategic planning in nonprofit arts organizations in order to address impacting conditions is unknown. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine perceptions of stakeholders towards authentic leadership, strategic planning, and organizational outcomes in metropolitan Detroit nonprofit arts organizations. The data were gathered in the form of telephone interviews with board members, staff, executives, and service recipients who participate in strategic planning in their identified organizations. The study explored experiences with authentic leadership traits, strategic planning, and organizational outcomes. The purposive sampling of stakeholders from eight nonprofit arts organizations in the metropolitan Detroit area occurred until multiple disconfirrnations indicated saturation. The data demonstrated that respondents observe five key issues regarding authentic leadership traits in the strategic planning process: 1) authentic leadership traits are lacking; 2) authentic leadership traits may mediate strategic planning and organizational outcomes; 3) authentic leadership traits are directly related to positive organizational outcomes; 4) effective strategic planning is directly related to positive organizational outcomes; 5) genuine, honest, authentic leaders balance art and commerce more effectively. Practical applications for mediating these issues include developing and utilizing a full complement of authentic leadership traits, and developing or professionalizing the strategic planning processes. It is recommended that future research examine the proposed mediation that was identified within and whether organizations with a better balance of art and commerce grow more than those lacking this balance.
