Thesis (Ed.D.)--California State University, Los Angeles, 2012.
The Centers for Disease Control has reported a steady rise in the obesity rate of Americans for the last several decades with childhood obesity rapidly becoming a major public health issue. Childhood obesity has been linked to various chronic illnesses like Type II diabetes, coronary artery disease, and a host of other metabolic disorders. Although there is no single clear cause most childhood obesity prevention strategies call for increased physical activity. This case study investigated how middle school students perceive and engage in physical activity and whether an afterschool physical activity intervention program can have an impact on the behavior and practices of middle school students.

This six-week case study was conducted at an afterschool program located at urban middle school in Los Angeles, California. The afterschool program service more than 190 students. Students who volunteered to be part of the study answered survey questions and participated in interviews and focus groups. From the research data four major themes and three essential program elements were uncovered. The case study also uncovered that knowledge and skill development, team participation, competition and group performances, and increased levels of self-esteem and self-confidence were motivating factors that contributed to students engaging, participating, and sustaining physical activity.

This study adds to the body of research attempting to uncover the attitudes and perceptions of middle school adolescents towards physical activity. A four-tier pyramid model was created to represent the theoretical relationship between physical activity programs and impact on student behaviors. This study also provides evidence for elements of high-quality physical activity programs.
