Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northern Illinois University, 2012.
The animal rights movement radically challenges the existing relationship that human beings have with all other non-human animals on a number of levels---from encouraging people to adopt a vegan lifestyle to ending the use of animals in medical testing. While a solid body of research has developed on the movement in recent decades, only Swedlow and Wildavsky's qualitative work investigates the cultural biases of its participants.

So, how do animal rights activists' commitment to their values and beliefs manifest themselves in their behavior and attitudes? This dissertation seeks to answer that question by testing a series of hypotheses that aim to uncover whether or not movement participants are in fact egalitarian, as well as whether or not they harbor sentiments consistent with an egalitarian worldview as predicted by cultural theory (e.g. they are critical of institutions). Here I examine the relationship between an egalitarian worldview and two categories of dependent variables: forms of advocacy (e.g. lobbying, protesting, and arson) and legal consciousness (i.e. perceptions of the law, police, and courts).

My approach utilizes Lieberman's nested analysis, which combines quantitative and qualitative measures and in an effort to both test and build (if necessary) cultural theory. After conducting a statistical analysis of survey data that I collected from activists, I interviewed a small group that includes people who both conform to, and challenge, findings in other research as well as propositions about egalitarians. In addition, this research compares the explanatory power of cultural theory measures to Jacoby's value trade-off measures.

My findings indicate that while a majority of animal rights activists are egalitarians, some of them are individualists. Also, the quantitative analysis yielded mixed support for my forms of advocacy hypotheses and no support for my legal consciousness hypotheses. Furthermore, even though cultural theory's worldview measures have a stronger explanatory power than the value trade-off measures (per the regression equations) the latter capture more of the variance in the sample (per the descriptive statistics, i.e. importance scores). Lastly, it is imperative to mention that applying mixed methods uncovered interview data that both corresponded with and contradicted the statistical data.
