This exploratory phenomenological study was designed to investigate the relationships between mathematics and music skills of students participating in successful high school instrumental music programs. The participants of this study were purposefully selected and included one math educator or math department chairperson and the band or orchestra director from 10 Texas 4A or 5A high schools deemed as successful by a panel of Texas music education experts. The research for this study utilized the narrative inquiry method of data collection. Open-ended questions were analyzed for common themes. Results of the study demonstrated commonalities between math and music skills, ways in which math teachers and music directors integrate music math, observations on the overall academic achievement of instrumentalists, and the perceptions of math and music teachers differentiating band and orchestra students from the general student population. For school administrators, these findings provide information on how to promote music and math integration in the classroom to improve student behavioral, emotional, or organizational skills in math achievement.
