The purpose of this study was to develop a community-based, psycho-educational program to address the need for group family interventions for Asian immigrant families with adolescents. Research has demonstrated that Asian immigrant families in North America experience significant intergenerational conflict and emotional alienation between parents and children due to acculturation gap. Children tend to acculturate faster than their parents because of their developmental differences and varying degrees of exposure and access to the host culture. Research has also indicated that intergenerational conflict in Asian immigrant families is related to negative youth and family outcomes. Previous psycho-educational program targeting Asian immigrant family relationships involved only the parents, demonstrating a need to include both parents and adolescents to strengthen parent-adolescent relationships.

520 $a This family program, therefore, was designed to: (1) increase knowledge of the cultural differences and their impact on intergenerational relationship; (2) increase communication skills; and (3) improve conflict resolution skills. Following program exposure, written feedback from Asian immigrant mothers and adolescents regarding curriculum content helped to establish the foundation to either support or refute a proposed intervention.
520 $a Five East Asian mother-adolescent dyads (one triad with the mother and two adolescents) provided high evaluation ratings, positive feedback, and meaning-making reflections, giving strong support for the utility of a brief, family psycho-educational program and its continued testing and refinement. As a result of participating in the program, mothers and adolescents stated that they were able to recognize and accept that they have different cultural values, communicate their perspectives with each other, and understand each other better. The three topic areas seemed to be relevant and helpful to Asian immigrant families. In addition to stating that they learned practical and relevant skills, all mothers and adolescents expressed appreciation for discussion/practice time. They also reported feeling normalized and validated for their experience. Furthermore, they pointed to the need to include fathers in the program. This program may be beneficial not only for Asian immigrant families but other immigrant families as well.
