Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2012.
Children's physical activity (PA) behaviors tend to carry into adulthood. Consequently, an emphasis has been placed on both the role of schools in providing adequate PA as well as the adoption of policies that require daily physical education (PE). However, few researchers have examined the relationship between PE requirements while in high school (HS) and PA among undergraduate students. Based on a socioecological model, this study included a quantitative, cross-sectional survey to examine the relationship between PE requirements while in HS and vigorous (VPA), moderate (MPA), and moderate-to-vigorous PA as young adults attending a 4-year university (N = 381; aged 18 years or older; mean = 21.4 years). Chi-square analyses indicated there were no significant (p < 0.05) differences in VPA, MPA, and moderate-to-vigorous PA participation between those young adults who met and those who did not meet PE requirements while in HS. However, both groups demonstrated PA participation rates that exceeded national averages. As a secondary finding, the results also suggested that total school-based PA participation while in HS may be better general indicator of subsequent PA as young adults than PE alone. Collectively, this study contributes to limited research examining the impact of high school PE and provides fuller understanding of the role of PE within the context of total school-based PA. The implication for social change includes the adoption of high school-based PA recommendations, specifically PE requirements that translate to higher levels of PA as young adults.
