Thesis (M.S.)--North Carolina Central University, 2014.
The purpose of the study was to examine sources of stress and coping styles among student-athletes at North Carolina Central University. The significance of the study lies in its potential to understand perceived and real sources of stress and coping styles and its impact on student-athletes' performance athletically and academically. Results of the study may raise the level of awareness of the types of stressors and coping styles experienced by student-athletes. The study may also contribute to the literature on stress and coping styles of student-athletes at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Possible problems may be identified and the athletic staff can determine actions to take and provide resources to meet the needs of student-athletes. Based upon the findings of the present study; the overall top 25% sources of stress among studentathletes at NCCU were academics, level of stress when they first sought counseling, financial concerns, overall stress compared to last year, and family concerns. The overall top 25% of coping styles were concentrating efforts on doing something about the situation I'm in, taking action to try to make the situation better, trying to make it seem more positive, looking for something good in what is happening, and accepting reality. There was a significant difference in sources of stress among male and female studentathletes at NCCU. There was no significant difference in coping styles among male and female student-athletes at NCCU.
